PRE-WEEKEND OPTIONS
Wed., April 10, 11 and 12 "The Trails and Trilliums 'Drawing Lessons from Nature' Workshop" a nature journaling workshop by Lendon Noe
Lendon Noe, an acclaimed teacher of journaling techniques for beginners or advanced, offers a three-day workshop that you may take for one or more days. (See details) The workshop will begin with the simplest materials, and participants will learn specific techniques for focusing attention and drawing from nature. The goal will be to learn to see and record our surroundings and prepare for the upcoming Trails and Trilliums weekend. Different techniques will be explored each day; no previous experience is necessary. The cost is $50 per day. Enrollment is limited to help insure a more comfortable and successful learning experience. 9:00-10:00 CUMBERLAND WILD FORUM The Friends of South Cumberland (FSC) invites everyone to "Parks without People?" How are we fighting "nature deficit disorder" in children and nurturing the naturalist in all of us to ensure that our parks will be used and loved in years to come? Why is it important, and what can we do to get more people involved? Panelists will share ideas about encouraging people of all ages to get out in nature via great resources such as the Tennessee Naturalist Program, Junior Ranger, the FSC's "Every Kid in the Park" program, and more. 9:00-11:30 Monteagle Assembly Stagecoach Road (North Nature Trail) Hike I (2.5 miles, moderate.) Walk to the bluff behind the Assembly and follow an old stagecoach road down the side of the mountain. Wildflowers rivaling Shakerag. Vans will shuttle you from the bottom back to the Assembly.

10:00-2:00 Gardens Gone Wild! "At Long Last," the summer home of Judith and Jim Humphreys, serves as the headquarters for everyone interested in native plants and woodland gardening. Visit this unique Assembly cottage and tour its lovely gardens. Workshops on gardening, nature photography and nature journaling (check the rest of the schedule for workshop details and locations.) Free materials, plein air painters to watch, gardening advice, photography tips. Be sure to include this stop on your schedule.

10:00-10:45 "Creating a Garden Paradise in the Shade" Workshop by June Mays. A "Gardens Gone Wild" event. Join June Mays- highly regarded garden designer, photographer and writer- for an exploration of shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers that love shade. She will show slides as she discusses techniques for successful planting and will touch on the challenges of co-existing with deer. Warren Chapel

10:15-12:00 Raven Point Hike. (Easy; 1.5 miles) Ride vans to the trailhead and walk on the flat trail out to Raven Point, offering one of the most dramatic views in the South Cumberland. Easy access to this outstanding vista is normally closed but is made available during Trails & Trilliums in order to showcase the land acquisition undertaken by the FSC and other conservation groups. From Raven's Point, you have a 270 degree view, overlooking the nearly 9,000 acres protected below.

10:30-12:30 Shakerag Hollow Hike I (Easy-Moderate, 1.5 miles) One of the most spectacular shows of wildflowers in the Southeast. Ride a van to the Sewanee gates. You will hike the upper portion of the Shakerag Trail, see scores of wildflowers and a waterfall, and then turn back.

10:45-12:15 Monteagle Assembly Nature Trails Hike to Warren's Point. (Easy.) Wind along the manicured Assembly trails with the option to go to Warren's Point, a breathtaking bluff behind the Assembly.

11:00-12:30 David Haskell Ramble I Join Professor Haskell, author of "The Forest Unseen," for an enlightening walk in the Assembly woods. David will focus on birds and the soundscape, with digressions to discuss what is seen along the trail. Naturalist Edward O. Wilson of Harvard noted that Haskell leads the reader into a place "in which the invisible appear, the small grow large, and the immense complex and beauty of life are more clearly revealed." Limited to 20 people. Pre-registration recommended; please select only one of the two sessions. THE 20 PEOPLE LIMIT FOR THIS EVENT HAS BEEN REACHED

11:00-11:45 "Nature Journaling" Workshop
by Lendon Noe, professional artist and college art professor. A Gardens Gone Wild event. An overview of nature journaling and discussion of selected useful journal techniques such as page altering and image transfer for recording observations in a nature journal or scrapbook. Humphreys cottage during Gardens Gone Wild.

11:15-12:15 "Monteagle Sunday School Assembly: Past and Present" Take a walk around the historic grounds. Learn the colorful history of the Assembly, dating back to 1882, and about current Assembly programs.

11:45-12:30 "Great Nature Photos with your Cell Phone?" Workshop by Jeff Roush. Photography tips from professional photographer and teacher Jeff Roush for those who use cell phones or other "simple" cameras. A "Gardens Gone Wild" event. Come chat with Jeff Roush about how to improve your photos of flowers, gardens and other elements of nature. Humphreys cottage during Gardens Gone Wild.

1:00-1:45 "Going Native - A Collaboration Between the Gardener and Nature" Workshop by Margaret Woods, a talented professional garden designer and artist. A "Gardens Gone Wild" event. This workshop will highlight the environmental value of using native plants, look at ways to take cues from nature, and then use these observations to create inspired garden designs.

1:00-4:00 Fiery Gizzard Hike (2 miles, easy or 3 miles, moderate) Ride vans to the Grundy Forest Loop trailhead. Great for families and a must for anyone who hasn't hiked the Gizzard. You can choose to hike to the rock pillars at Sycamore Falls or take a more leisurely walk with time to splash in the creek, explore a huge rockhouse cave, and climb on the boulders. The Fiery Gizzard Trail has been recognized as one of the national outstanding hiking trails by Backpacker Magazine.

"The Forest Unseen: An Ecological View of Life"
Haskell, a Sewanee Biologist and author of the acclaimed book The Forest Unseen, is a gifted writer and a magical speaker.
He spent a year studying the secret world hidden in a square meter of forest in Shakerag Hollow as a window onto the natural world. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

- HIKES & WORKSHOPS -

8:15-3:00 Collins Gulf Wildflowers and Waterfalls Hike - On the "Hike Em All" Checklist! (6 miles. Moderate-Strenuous with 600-foot elevation change) Mary Priestley, past president of the FSC and an amazing botanist and guide, will lead this hike to one of the least traveled trails of the South Cumberland State Park. Pack water and lunch and bring cameras! You will cross the creek at towering Suter Falls and wind through incredible wildflowers to a picnic spot near Horsepound Falls before heading back. Meet at Citizens State Bank in front of the Assembly at 8:15 to carpool or meet at the trailhead in Gruetli-Lager at 9:00.

10:00 - 3:00 New Event! Van Tour: Introducing the Parks of the South Cumberland! Especially for those who want to see the majesty of the South Cumberland with limited walking. All stops are handicapped accessible. Vans will leave from the Assembly. You will visit the fabled Stone Door, see the 60-foot high Foster Falls, stop at the Visitors Center, and drive through Grundy Lakes State Park. A "tour guide" will provide information as you drive. Box lunch Cost $30. Lunch included. Limited to 28 people. Pre-registration required.

10:00-3:00 Fiery Gizzard Wildflower Trek with TN State Naturalist Randy Hedgepath. (4-5 miles/Moderate to Strenuous) Hikers will caravan to the Grundy Forest parking lot. The hike will follow the creek past Sycamore Falls and the "Fruit Bowl" to an area with wondrous wildflowers. Hiking with Randy Hedgepath is always entertaining and educational. He is a true state treasure. Bring a lunch. Meet at Citizens State Bank in front of the Assembly at 10:00 to carpool or at the Grundy Forest parking lot at 10:15.

11:00-3:00 Hike at Foster Falls: On the "Hike Em All" Checklist! (Two options) Ride vans from the Assembly to this cascading 60-foot waterfall. If you choose to hike (3 miles, moderate), you will follow a trail that leads along the creek and up to a dramatic site above the falls. Or walk on the handicapped accessible trail to a platform for viewing the falls and spend time enjoying the view and picnicking. Vans will bring you back to the Assembly. Bring a lunch.
